Passing away in 2020, Ennio Morricone left an indelible mark on the world of music with over 500 compositions for cinema that revolutionized the perception of soundtracks. The MoMA exhibition celebrates this immersive legacy through his most iconic compositions, including masterpieces like the scores for "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Once Upon a Time in America."

Curated with expertise, the exhibition is divided into various thematic sections that emphasize Morricone's uniqueness. Each area of the exhibition is dedicated to a particular aspect of his style, from the innovative use of unconventional instruments to historical collaborations with directors such as Sergio Leone and Giuseppe Tornatore.

To celebrate one of the greatest film composers of all time, MoMA, in collaboration with Cinecittà, organized a retrospective of over 35 films running from December 1 to January 20, 2024. With more than 17 new digital restorations and archival 35mm prints, the exhibition offers a rich selection of films including the Dollar Trilogy, John Carpenter's "The Thing," Bernardo Bertolucci's "1900," and Giuseppe Tornatore's "Cinema Paradiso."

Joshua Siegel from MoMA's Department of Film stated: "This retrospective on Ennio Morricone is the largest that MoMA has ever dedicated to a film composer." The retrospective begins with a screening of "Cinema Paradiso" on December 1, followed by the documentary "Ennio" the next day.

Those in New York will have the opportunity to purchase tickets for "Cinema Paradiso" starting November 17 for museum members, and from November 24 for non-members.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is an interactive room where visitors can experience the effect of Morricone's compositions in film scenes first without music and then with his soundtrack, thereby highlighting the impact of his music on cinematic storytelling.

MoMA has also integrated advanced technological elements to allow visitors to interact with Morricone's music in innovative ways, creating personalized arrangements or exploring how small variations in musical themes can drastically alter the emotion of a scene.

Morricone's resonance in the cultural landscape is evident not only among cinema and music enthusiasts but also in art more generally. His compositions have reached a level of recognition that transcends national and generational boundaries, making Morricone an emblematic figure of Italian art worldwide.

The exhibition "The Italian Genius" at MoMA is not just a tribute to Ennio Morricone but also an exploration of the power of music as a universal art form, once again confirming MoMA's commitment to preserving and celebrating the giants of world art. This exhibition is destined to leave an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of visitors.
